ORIGINAL: wing2000 quote:
If you have mice in your house, you can put traps in every corner, seal up every known opening, and deploy a battalion of cats to patrol every room, 24-7. But is there is someone who is feeding these mice, who puts food out for them, who benefits from their presence - someone who is not afraid of repercussions if caught aiding and abetting - the mice will get in. And eventually, even the cats will realize the futility of their efforts. I agree with you. But tell that to the politicians who say we need more cats and mouse traps. We do need more cats, more mouse traps, AND we have to cut off the food supply. The problem is that we have one side want's ONLY more cats and the other side wants ONLY to pretend to punish the food supply while rewarding lawless behavior. Today, there are 22,800 U.S. Border Patrol agents, five times the number in 1993. About 17,000 agents work along the Southwest corridor, double the number from seven years ago. They are supported by National Guard troops, local police and thousands of port officers using everything from drug-sniffing dogs to gamma-ray machines. • In Arizona, the primary smuggling corridor on the U.S.-Mexico line, there are now more than 3,600 Border Patrol agents, about 10 for every mile of boundary with Mexico. • The budget this fiscal year for Customs and Border Protection, the federal agency charged with guarding U.S. borders, is about $17 billion, double what was spent in 2003. • The number of illegal immigrants arrested by Border Patrol has plummeted by almost two-thirds in just five years, a combined result, authorities say, of fewer people trying to cross because of the economy and increased security. I'd like to see more effort in cutting off the food supply. And I belive polls show most Americans support both approaches together.
