I've been hearing a lot about the planet alignment that's probably going to happen in December 2012, according to the Mayans and other groups of people. I was told by someone who watched the History Channel, that this event had occurred about 26,000 or 46,000 years ago. Since there might have been a change in the polar shift or other serious earth changes at that time, I was wondering about several things: 1. Could this past event have killed off the dinosaurs? 2. If they were not killed off by this event, then what might have happened to them?

Oh, why didn't I think of that?

Most non-avian dinosaurs were probably wiped out around the time of what scientest call the KT event between 64 and 65 million years ago. Nobody knows exactly what happened, but there is strong evidence that it may have been connected to an extraterestrial impact from a meteor or asteroid. This theory is suppourted by the fact that the element iridium (relatively rare on Earth but more abundant in space debris) is much better represented in the geological boundry between the end of the Cretaceous and the start of the Tertiary/Paleogene era then in other places.

I know what killed off all but two of the dinosaurs: global warming and plastic Wal Mart bags! I say all but two because you are forgetting about Barney and Nessie. Yes, that was just humor. Back to your regularly scheduled seriousness.

Yes, that was just humor. Back to your regularly scheduled seriousness. tpbc, Actually that isn't too bad and it is at least somewhat closer to the truth. The KT boundary entioned by StephenJ was most likely caused by a giant meteorite striking the earth in the vicinity of the Yucatan peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico. The impact or the meteor threw up so muc material into the atmosphere that it certainly would have caused Climate Change®. I doubt that it was warming but more likely cooling. The only dinosaurs that could cope with the colder climate were the ones with insulation (feathers) and were the ancestors to our present birds. Even though I know your explanation (humorous or not) was made up... it fits the data we have far better than any global flood. Not sure where the Wal Mart bags fit in... were there Wal Marts before the 1962 when Sam Walton founded the company? As far as Barney is concerned I think that is just a person inside a suit. Ann Nessie is a subject for those terrible MonsterQuest shows. You story is no more made up than the one made up by a bunch of bronze age sheep herders.

StephenJ's already explained the most likely cause of the dinosaur extinction, but I would add that polar shifts could certainly not have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Indeed, polar shifts happen as frequently as every 100,000 years, which means that there were dozens of them during the time dinosaurs roamed the Earth. As for the planetery alignment in 2012 --- that's all just superstitious nonsense dreamed up by New Agers looking for something else to sell books about after the Y2K gravy train flopped when nothing happened. Nothing remotely corrected to where the Earth is in relation to the galaxy is going to happen.

Didn't God command Noah to save breeding pairs so that the different species could repopulate? Or did that command not extend to dinos? Of course the created kinds of dinosaurs were saved on the Ark. Surely those select number of breeding pairs did not exceed 1% of the earth's population around 2300 BC, right? Given the paucity of dinosaur remains since then, it appears they were unable to adapt to dramatic changes in the post-Flood world environment unlike other created kinds of reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Given that there have over 1,000 species of dinosaur found so far (and we've likely barely begun to scrape the surface), some of which were over 200ft long and 100 tonnes in weight, and since they couldn't survive post-flood anyway, then what would have been the point in sticking them all in a boat and taking up valuable room in the first place? (Not to mention the tons of food supplies that would have been necessary just to keep them alive.)

It's a little known fact that some dinosaurs have been found to have cigarettes and matches lying next to them when they were unearthed. A little known paleontologist has displayed the tobacco addiction of the dinosaurs.

ORIGINAL: Marcus I thought that was a central tenet of the Scientologists. Planetary alignment with the Milky Way's core, a rogue planet orbiting nearly perpendicular to the plane of the other planets, famine, flood, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the end of the earth or something like that? I hadn't heard that one specifically, but it's clear that some time after Y2K, all the pseudoscientists who write stuff about "the Ancients," Nibiru, rogue planets, "Earth Changes" --- a sort of secular Armageddon, I guess --- latched on to the Mayan calendar's 2012 ticking over (like a mileometer reaching 100,000 miles) as the next big date they could use to sell their silly theories to the masses. The biggest question surrounding 2012 is what date will they pick next (when nothing happens in 2012)? I'm guessing something between 2025 and 2030.

Whatever date it is will involve some complex and esoteric calculations to arrive at the date. IMHO the Mayans simply didn't see the need to calculate past 2012.

Nothing remotely corrected to where the Earth is in relation to the galaxy is going to happen. The popular theory that YEC advocates put forward (like in Noah's Ark a Feasibility study) is that larger dinosaur species were taken on as babies. The problem is then why an all knowing God would lead these animals to the boat when they would be incapable of living in a post flood world?

So much for the idea of preserving species on the ark.
