Etc or Ect?
Etc. It is short for the Latin Et Cetera, meaning 'and the other things.' Just remember that the translation starts with "and" and the latin for and is et.

Et tu, brute? And You, Brutus?

Ugh - I cringe and shudder when people use apostrophes to pluralize words!

Yeah it is. It's shorthand for a certain bodily function!

Or is that "body" function?

Irregardless is not a word. Use regardless in its place.

My copy of Eats, Shoots, & Leaves is on order.

I haven't used it in the threads, but I've said it in real life. "I need to unthaw some meat." Duh. . . I don't plan on freezing it!

Well, if we're getting into that, I always wonder why people need a "hot water heater" since the water's already hot. Or is it the heater that's hot? Don't touch it!

Two words that people seem to spell wrong quite often:

Separate -- I learned in middle school that there's "a rat" in separate. That helps me get that one right.

Surprise -- That first 'r' is missing quite often (suprise).

I try to be good with spelling and grammar, but I'll occasionally mess up something. Usually because my fingers work faster than my brain!

I remember "separate" because I think of paring an apple and separating the skin from the rest of the fruit.

And I just count on Firefox spell check to make sure I spell separate right.

Loving this thread. These things drive me so totally nuts, especially when I read them in books, or see them on billboards or menus. And I do, a lot! Grrrrrrrrr!

Speaking of which, have they changed "a lot" into one word? It seems that's all I see anymore.

Nope, it's still "a lot". There's also no such word as "alright."

Try using it in school--you will get marked down for it.

Generally, most editors and teachers don’t think “alright” is all right. If you’re in doubt, it’s best to stick with the more widely accepted two-word “all right,” especially in formal academic or professional writing.

Another interesting article about "alright".

But, it's in the Dictionary!

OP = I've seen several posts in the last few days where people have used the word "loose" when they mean "lose".

Well, I've been losing weight and eventually I find that when my wife says the jeans are fitting too loose I seem to lose them.

I like suspenders. How come my loose becomes lose? O, wait a minute. Never mind.

It really seems to me that I learned it as a spelling word. It's been over 45 years, but it's like right there in the depths of my memory. I could be wrong though.

A word of warning!

If you ever visit the UK, be prepared for some strange looks if you say that!

Oh alright, be that way.

That's not correct?

JFYI, "all right?" is a pretty standard greeting in many parts of the UK. I don't have the nerve though to stop and ask everyone who says it how they spell it.
