Here's another one:

Mixing up bowl and bowel.

The difference is obvious:

Eating a large bowl of prunes can cause some uncomfortable bowel problems.

Yes, that's a funny one. I remember once some of our Messianic friends from Israel were here for a few years while the husband went to college. The wife tended to get words mixed up from time to time. For example, she was horrified at a billboard advertising condominiums, and when she'd teach us Jewish dancing she'd instruct us to go in a cycle. During Passover one year, they offered to teach our church about the customs and meanings of each element. They had hand-outs with instructions for each participant, and the hand-out instructed us to "pass the bowels to the right" after we washed our hands. It was so funny.

I caught Fitz in one a couple of weeks ago. In a thread he named Christianity: Not for Pollyanna People, he wrote "I loved the title but the rest of the article is alluding me."

So I had to ask: Did you mean "alluding" or "eluding?"

He never answered.....but he did correct the spelling.

It is in Joisey! And it's also listed in most dictionaries with the annotation "Non-standard". But if ain't ain't a word, then how'd ya type it?

DaveW--You said "Fitz" instead of "Fritz." Considering the thread, I just got a kick out of that.

My former pastor used to put up power point presentations refering to "Super Hero's" coming to an event.

I finally had to send the following e-mail:

"It's PLURAL not POSESSIVE! Hero's is posessive: The hero's cape. The hero's girlfriend.

PLURAL is simply HEROS."

Please, for the love of pete, learn the proper use of an apostrophe!

I've heard many people over the last 36 hours refer to someone who handles the books for a community as its "physical officer."

Actually, it's "HEROES".

And it's "possessive".

Ugh - I cringe and shudder when people use apostrophes to pluralize words!

And don't get me started on it's and its...

Oh! Oh! How about the price of .99¢?? If I hand them a penny, do I get change back?

One of my favourite punctuation/grammar books is "Eats Shoots and Leaves" by Lynne Truss. I don't know if anyone else has heard of it? If you're chuckling at this thread, then you will LOVE this book.

A kind of review HERE (link)

Another one which I seem to do quite often, without meaning to, is typing accidently, instead of accidentally. For some reason, my fingers want to type the first word, rather than the second one.

My spell checker in Google lets me know when I have made that mistake myself.

Ooooooh, I've thought of another one.

As in I wonder WHETHER or not the WEATHER will be fine today?

So many times I have seen weather used instead of whether.

The one I consistently type wrong is "commercials". I nearly always type "commericals."

A couple more:

It's weird, not wierd. (Wierd looks weirder, but it really does need to be just weird. )

And it's deity, not diety - unless it's to do with worshipping the latest weight-loss fad.

Oh, and not to upset anyone actually on this thread, but it's "formerly" known as, not "formally", unless Humbleinspirit is your legal, formal, name.

Hmmmmm....

I guess I have been leaving off that 'r' from his name for a long time......
