quote:
Look a gift horse in the mouth Refers to the story of the 'Trojan horse' -- a massive wooden horse statue, given by an army that had the city of Troy under siege. The idea being (I think) that the statue was to honour the gods that both sides served, that it was to be burned as an offering. The Trojans accepted the gift horse, without looking in it's mouth, and wheeled it into their city. That turned out badly for them, since the hollow horse was packed with warriors who broke out and wreaked havoc inside the city. I think it was the end of the siege. So, the 'moral of the story is' that if someone who you ought to be suspicious of does something nice, you might be wise to look for ulterior motives (you should look a gift horse in the mouth) -- OR -- in the same situation, you should be more trusting and accept the nice gesture at face value (you should not look a gift horse in the mouth).

This is the way I've always understood the expression: The common folk saying "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" is taken from the era when gifting horses was common. The teeth of horses are a good indication of the age of the animal, and it was considered rude to inspect the teeth of a gifted animal as you would one that you were purchasing. The saying is used in reference to being an ungrateful gift receiver.

Grand Poobah is a term derived from the name of the haughty character Pooh-Bah in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado (1885). In this comic opera, Pooh-Bah holds numerous exalted offices, including "First Lord of the Treasury, Lord Chief Justice, Commander-in-Chief, Lord High Admiral... Archbishop of Titipu, and Lord Mayor" and Lord High Everything Else. The name has come to be used as a mocking title for someone self-important or high-ranking and who either exhibits an inflated self-regard or who has limited authority while taking impressive titles. As horses age, their back teeth become longer and longer. An old horse will have very long teeth. If someone gave you a horse as a gift, it would be considered bad manners to look in the horse's mouth.

OK, apparently I'm crazy -- or somebody put a new expression into an old story at some point in my childhood.

Maybe it's because I spent some time on a farm and most of my mother's family were farmers with livestock, so I knew about judging the age and health of a horse by its teeth. And being from the South, we learned early what was and wasn't polite.

It had to do with back in the 1800's when they would take hay and other stuff and put it into a blanket sack and tie it tight so that mice and other things did not get out, therefore you slept tight.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, Ruthie, but in the middle ages, some wheelbarrows had hoppers that were baskets - a basket on a handcart. Possibly large enough to hold a person, with arms and legs hanging out. I get the feeling this saying started because too many people got hauled home drunk in these things. From the later years of the medaeval period, the whole nine yards refers, or so the story goes, to kilts worn by the Scots and Irish, which were made from 9 yards of wool. I've seen a full 9 yard kilt being worn, and its folds can serve as a cloak and a sleeping blanket for someone who spends much of their time outdoors like a warrior or a shepherd.

'Raining cats and dogs' was explained to me the last time I was in Williamsburg Va. The point made was that a home was built into a hill. The porch was covered. Since the home was in a hill, the dogs and cats could get on the roof of the porch. During a strong rain, the cats and dogs would fall through the roof. I don't know if it is true.

Were you ever in the act of cleaning up a yard for instance, and someone says to you, "you don't have to go hog wild" just get the heavy stuff. I've always chuckled at that. Can you imagine going hog wild? Especially with a rake in your hand? Lol, I can picture it.
