Support is mounting for a University of Illinois professor who was fired for telling students in his Catholicism class that he agrees with the Catholic Church's teaching against homosexuality.

A student at the university accused Professor Ken Howell of engaging in "hate speech" when he stated in a class review session that he agreed with the Catholic teaching that homosexuality is immoral. (See earlier article)

If you'd do some checking you'd discover that the issue that led to his firing had nothing to do with him "agreeing" with the Catholic teaching that homosexuality is immoral.

Apparently he sent a lengthy (and somewhat graphic) e-mail to his students arguing that homosexuality violates natural law.

Here's one excerpt from the e-mail that got him in trouble:

quote:

In other words, sexual acts are only appropriate for people who are complementary, not the same. How do we know this? By looking at REALITY. Men and women are complementary in their anatomy, physiology, and psychology. Men and women are not interchangeable. So, a moral sexual act has to be between persons that are fitted for that act. Homosexual men have been known to engage in certain types of actions for which their bodies are not fitted...Yet, if the morality of the act is judged only by mutual consent, then there are clearly homosexual acts which are injurious to their health but which are consented to. Why are they injurious? Because they violate the meaning, structure, and (sometimes) health of the human body.

Instructor of Catholicism at UI claims loss of job violates academic freedom

There's no doubt that Howell sent a questionable e-mail, the university overreacted, and the source you quoted is shading the truth to try to make this seem much scarier than it really is.
